Who needs Brett Favre? The Minnesota Vikings, that's who!

The country is getting more and more disgusted with each passing day as one of the NFL's greatest quarterbacks continues to make a mockery of his career by behaving like a spoiled diva. As if it weren't bad enough that we were subjected to endless speculation his last three seasons in Green Bay over whether he would or would not be in training camp, we now face year two of whether he will come out of retirement or stay out for good. Whether you loved Brett Favre throughout his career, or hated him, you cannot deny his place among the all time greats at his position.

Despite Favre's behavior over the past two years, he is still a viable option at quarterback. The fact of the matter is, if the Minnesota Vikings ever want to come with a breath of touching the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the foreseeable future they should get Brett Favre in camp ASAP and get him sleeping with a Vikings playbook. There are three simple reasons Minnesota needs to continue to pursue Brett Favre and pray he dons the purple and gold of the Vikings come September. I should preface all of this by saying this is assuming Favre's shoulder is healthy enough to play again.

Reason number one the Vikings should sign Brett Favre is the fact that Minnesota has a once in a lifetime combination of playmakers to surround him with and make a legitimate run at the Super Bowl. Minnesota's offense has explosive potential all around. Sydney Rice and Bernard Berrian at WR can change a game in minutes and I don’t need to really go in depth on how quickly Adrian Peterson can change a game. If those guys weren't enough, the Vikings drafted Percy Harvin from Florida who had a wildly successful collegiate career as an explosive game changer. The Vikings defense isn't without its talent with Jared Allen, Pat Williams, Kevin Williams, EJ Henderson, and Chad Greenway anchoring a defense that most teams don't even bother trying to run against.

Let's be honest, a combination of players like this rarely exist in the salary cap era and the Vikings need to make drastic moves to try and capitalize on this group's potential while they still can. Aside from the Patriots, no team in the modern era of football has been able to put together and keep together a group of all star players long enough to make multiple Super Bowl runs. With all due respect to Minnesota, this isn't a situation either where guys are going to be willing to check egos at the door and take pay cuts to remain. The level of devotion to team is not as high in Minnesota as it is in Green Bay, New England, or Dallas, and if that weren't enough to dissuade a player from taking a pay cut, having to play in the dull Metrodome would be.

Reason number two the Vikings should sign Brett Favre is actually four reasons rolled into one: Tarvaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels, Gus Frerotte, and John David Booty. It is a sad state of affairs at quarterback in Minnesota and has been really since the departure of Fran Tarkenton as a series of washed up has-beens and young never-will-bes have been paraded through in hopes of leading the Vikings back to the promised land. Frerotte has the most experience of the four, but at 39 years old hasn't accomplished nearly as much as Favre has at 40. Rosenfels has the next most experience in the group with a grand total of 32 games under center. Rosenfels however has never played more than nine games in one season, and has played more than six games just twice. Jackson has gone back and forth as the pet project of head coach Brad Childress and has seen more up than down in his young NFL career. Booty, who had a solid collegiate career has yet to throw a pass in a meaningful NFL game. The Vikings have a championship caliber team with star talent at every position on the field except the most important, at quarterback.

Reason number three the Vikings should sign Brett Favre is Brett Favre. His career and accomplishments speak for themselves. In case you are unaware, Favre has played in 273 NFL games including all 16 regular season games in each season from 1993-2008. The other four options for the Vikings have played a combined 204 games. Favre has thrown 464 TDs in his career, the Vikings vaunted quadruplets have combined to throw 164 TDs, 300 fewer. Some might argue that Favre has lost a step or two and that he is more of a liability as he is prone to throw just as many INTs, but the fact of the matter is that is nothing new. Favre is now and always has been a gun slinging quarterback prone to making high risk decisions when it comes to passing. He has always lived and died by the sword, but Favre still has the ability and if he still has the desire there is no reason not to sign him. Like him or hate him, Favre has something in the past 18 years the Minnesota Vikings organization doesn't, two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl ring.

Sometimes we have to do things we don't like. The Vikings have a tremendous compilation of talent on their team right now but lack on field leadership and talent from the most important position on the team. Favre wants to play, no one else seems to want him. You don't have good quarterbacks, Favre is a great quarterback, seems like a simple decision.
